Job description

Our client, a successful global manufacturing company based in South Shields are looking to recruit a Health & Safety Officer on a full-time permanent basis. 

Role Purpose:

To act as the competent person for Health and Safety & Environmental matters as defined by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Ensuring the organization complies with current and forthcoming Health and Safety & Environmental legislation. Approves Codes of Practice and guidance in relation to employment and service provision.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Quality Manager, the successful candidate would cover the areas of responsibility below.
  • To work proactively with managers to establish and maintain a system that promotes a culture of safe working practices across the organization.
  • To assist managers, implement Health & Safety systems and procedures to meet specific requirements, such as accident reporting and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) in a consistent and effective manner.
  • To provide direct support and leadership of the Health, Safety and environmental requirements to all relevant departments.
  • To ensure the Company's Health, Safety & Environmental Policy is implemented and monitored.
  • To assist in the identification of training needs for employees and develop/deliver training as required.
  • Ensure all contracting employees are compliant and work in accordance with site procedures.
  • To carryout audits to evaluate the effectiveness of Health, safety & Environmental systems, and procedures, identify and implement improvements.
  • Investigate and to assist others to investigate the circumstances and causes of accidents and take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.
  • To ensure routine Health & Safety activities and checks are carried out e.g., testing of portable electrical appliances, internal asbestos surveying, emergency lighting, the review of risk assessments and where necessary introduce relevant control measures.
  • Support the Quality team with their ISO9001 auditing requirements.

Person Specification:
  • Previous background working a Health and Safety role in a manufacturing facility.
  • Professional communication skills to all levels of stakeholders.
  • Good organisational and prioritization skills, will the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of ISO45001, ISO14001 and REACH.
  • Experience of managing emergency procedures and supporting crisis situations (CRISIS management)
  • COSHH -desirable 
  • Chartered member of IOSH (or working towards)
  • NEBOSH Diploma is essential , however if a candidate has a IEMA Environmental Diploma this is desirable.
